Let's discover foam rubber...
If you are passionate about “do it yourself” you've surely heard of it, and you've surely heard it called in many different ways: rubber crepla, moosgummi, fommy, rubber eva, foamy, foam, etc.
In fact, the abundance of names reflects the popularity of the product. Much appreciated and loved by creatives from all over the world of craft. Why?
It has many features that make it perfect for the Do It Yourself, even though it is applied in many different sectors.
- It is extremely malleable and can be painted, shaped, glued, washed and sewn.
- It is ideal for use with children, as it is soft and easy to cut, also perfect for creating small details without fraying.
- Suitable for creative projects in general – craft – small jobs – creative hobbies for adults, as it is thermoformable.
- Heated with a heat source (hot air blower) or with an iron, it can be easily shaped with your hands or with supports, creating highly professional creations, and those who use it often know that it is almost waterproof.
It also has another important feature: it is non-toxic. The product is based on polyethylene.
Curiosity:
Polyethylene was first accidentally synthesized by German chemist Hans von Pechmann in 1898, while heating diazomethane. His colleagues Eugen Bamberger and Friedrich Tschirner analyzed the white, waxy substance on the walls of the container and found that it contained long chains of -CH2-, and decided to call this substance polymethylene.
But let's go back to our foam rubber alias (moosgummi, fommy, eva rubber, etc 🙂 ).
Usually the phases Of Each creation with foam rubber can be divided into three steps:
– The design of the idea. What does this mean? That the foam rubber can be marked with a pencil before continuing. Convenient, isn't it? - The cutting phase: a simple pair of scissors will also do just fine.
– The modelling phase. This is my favorite.
Foam rubber is heat resistant, so you can heat it to make it more malleable.
Do you have a hair dryer handy?
Attention with the glitter version! Heat can take away some of the shine and possibly cause cracks.
– The final composition.
At this stage you will probably need to use hot glue, for a more durable result, but if you want to try, know that the eva rubber can also be sewn, although with a little caution...
